Pennsylvania State University (PSU) is a renowned public research university in Pennsylvania, established in 1855 as Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania. It became the state's first land-grant university in 1863 and has multiple campuses across the state, including its main campus in State College and College Township. Penn State is also a sea-grant, space-grant, and one of only seven sun-grant universities. It is classified as an "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity" and is a member of the Association of American Universities. The university has two law schools, Penn State Law on the University Park campus and Penn State Dickinson Law in Carlisle, and the College of Medicine in Hershey. The university maintains 19 commonwealth campuses and five special mission campuses throughout Pennsylvania. The Penn State Nittany Lions athletic teams compete in the Big Ten Conference in Division I of the NCAA.
